Excerpts from the Lars John Redberg Diaries of 1909 - 1912 of Life in South Tillamook County especially of Oretown, Oregon.
NVMS students typed these excerpts during the fall of 2002.
Edna Redberg very kindly excerpted these interesting portions of the diaries and provided them to NVMS. The complete diaries of Lars John Redberg are in the Pioneer Museum in Tillamook, Oregon. They were donated by Erwin and Edna Redberg.
The following diary entries were typed by NVMS students, Sarah S. and J.R., and edited by Dean Bones.
Aug. 15 - Willie came home. Brought 18lbs.of net twine. Barb Ray knit for Willie. Willie and Wayne Franklin will fish together.
Aug. 16 - Mr.Waymire helped knit on Willie's net and guests helped track cloth on our new front room.
Aug. 18 - Rev. Whitely from Newberg & another had services at the hall.
Aug. 19 - Mr. Porter helped me finish chicken house. Ole got doors & windows & a piece of floor from our old house. I helped.
Aug. 21 - Bert Ray & I are going to start fishing together.
Aug. 22 - Ole & family, Willie, & Wayne Franklin moved over to fish camp today.
Aug. 25 - "The Jack Rabbit" made a round trip over the Nestucca Bar today.
Aug. 28 - Wife & children, Porters, Mendenhalls, Orella & daughter, Muriel Richardson, visited with us at Fish Camp today.
Sept.3 - Wife & I stretched wire today. Not many fish now.
Sept.10 - Bar is very wide & shallow & treacherous. The "Gerald "C " came in today.
Sept. 12, 1912 - Successfully blasted Steamboat Snag.
Sept. 16, 1912 - Bert Ray and I put 20 fathoms more to length of our Chinook net, making 85 fathoms now.
Sept. 18, 1912 - Large group went to "Sand Cape" to pick huckleberries. Mrs. Green, of Neskowin, started painting our house this A.M.
Sept. 20, 1912 - Lester Ray and family moved to their new home. They bought Fox Bros. 60 acres farm near Sam Fletcher.
Sept. 24, 1912 - Has been very foggy at sea. I went home for a while today.
Sept. 27, 1912 - Gerald "C" went out and "Della" came in and went out. (Steamboat snag redwood and 8' diameter large pieces pulled ashore to clear for net fishing.)
Oct. 6, 1912 - "Della" came to the bar this A.M. Too rough to come in.
Oct. 7, 1912 - "Della" is still outside. Too rough.
Oct. 12, 1912 - Was home today & worked on house. In evening a heavy run of Chinooks came with some Silversides. The bar was a moving mass of seemingly thousands of fish.
Oct.13,1912 - Heavy run of fish still on. "Della" came in today.
