Neskowin Community

The mural shown below was designed, created and installed at the Neskowin Wayside State Park by Neskowin Valley School students under the direction of Judith and Ted Schlicting of Neskowin.

(Note that this photo of the mural was taken with my digital camera, and it makes the mural look somewhat skewed. The actual mural has perfect proportions! db)

Here is information copied off of the Neskowin Valley School website about the mural:

"A community mural project proposed by Judith Schlicting, art instructor at Neskowin Valley School, received a $1,500 grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust as part of the Trust’s Support for Teacher Initiatives program.

This project was based within the existing NVS art curriculum, and students at all grade levels participated in designing and making a mural that focuses on some aspect of the local community and its natural environment. The mural was designed for permanent installation at the Neskowin Wayside.

Students created relief images and designs on “puzzle-piece” tiles of wet clay that were cut from large sheets rolled and pressed to a uniform thickness and consistency with a slab roller—a hand operated machine ideally suited for this purpose. After drying, and firing in a kiln, the tiles are glazed and re-fired, or left unglazed, depending on design considerations. The tiles are then adhered to a backing board, and the mural framed, grouted, and installed on location.

Oregon State Parks approved the approximately 4’ x 5’ mural to be displayed at the Neskowin Wayside State Park. Additional sites in the Neskowin/Pacific City are also being explored."

The Kelp Forest mural was installed on the Neskowin Wayside State Park restrooms facility. As you can tell from the tile to the right, which actually appears on the lower right of the mural, the mural was created and is maintained by the Neskowin Valley School students and family.
