After we viewed all
of the school sites that we could, we walked up to Gist Cemetery located
on Old Woods Road. Many of the students at NVMS have participated in the
ongoing effort to restore the cemetery. It long ago became overgrown with
weeds and trees.
The students are slowly working through a process of identifying plants,
identifying grave sites, locating headstones etc.
On the day of the school tour, this energetic and helpful boys located
this headstone over the hillside behind them. They worked hard to carry
and push it back to its former site.
It isn't for sure, yet, if the stones will be reattached to the bases.
It's difficult to make them very sturdy. Soon a determination will be
made of how best to display the headstones using advice from experts in
cemetery restoration.
